Madurai West Battle: Sellur K. Raju Eyes Fourth Straight Win as DMK Gains Ground
AIADMK stronghold since 2001 faces shifting voter trends with narrowing margins and rising DMK challenge in Madurai West constituency.
Madurai: In the politically significant Madurai West Assembly constituency, long regarded as a stronghold of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), former minister Sellur K. Raju faces a crucial electoral test as he seeks a fourth consecutive victory. The constituency, which has consistently backed the AIADMK since 2001, is witnessing a gradual rise in the vote share of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), setting the stage for a closely watched contest.
Madurai West carries historical weight in Tamil Nadu politics. It was from this constituency that M. G. Ramachandran secured victory in 1980, paving the way for his second term as Chief Minister. Over the decades, the seat has produced several prominent leaders, including ministers and a Speaker of the Assembly.
Sellur Raju’s political career has been closely tied to Madurai West. He entered the fray for the first time in the 2007 by-election following the untimely demise of AIADMK MLA Shanmugam but lost to Congress candidate K.S.K. Rajendran. However, he went on to establish a strong electoral foothold, winning three consecutive Assembly elections in 2011, 2016, and 2021.
During the AIADMK’s tenure in power, Sellur Raju served as Cooperation Minister for a decade, with Madurai West forming the backbone of his political influence. His victories, though consistent, have shown a declining margin over the years—dropping from around 38,000 votes in 2011 to 16,000 in 2016, and further narrowing to approximately 10,000 votes in 2021 against DMK candidates.
The constituency today has an electorate of about 271,000 voters, including roughly 133,000 men and 138,000 women. Socially, it is a diverse seat with significant representation from Mukkulathor (around 30%), Pillai (15%), Chettiar, Yadava, and Adi Dravidar communities, all of whom play a decisive role in shaping electoral outcomes.
Development projects brought to the constituency during Sellur Raju’s tenure include anganwadi centres, fair price shop buildings, drinking water tanks, small bridges, restoration of the Madakulam tank, a check dam across the Vaigai river at Kodimangalam, the Kalavasal flyover, and the Madurai–Mullaperiyar combined drinking water scheme. However, a long-pending underground drainage project remains unfulfilled, continuing to be a key demand among residents.
While the AIADMK aims to retain its dominance and secure a fourth straight win for Sellur Raju, the DMK is working to overturn its 25-year losing streak in the constituency. Adding to the competitive landscape, smaller players like Naam Tamilar Katchi and the newly emerging Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam have also entered the fray, intensifying the contest.
With narrowing victory margins and shifting political currents, Madurai West stands at a crossroads, raising a critical question: can Sellur Raju hold on to his bastion, or will the constituency script a new political chapter?
