PM Modi Congratulates Malaysian PM Anwar Ibrahim on ASEAN Chairmanship, to Attend 47th ASEAN Summit Virtually
Leaders discuss strengthening India–Malaysia ties and ASEAN-India partnership ahead of the Kuala Lumpur summit from October 26–28.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a cordial phone call today, extended his congratulations to Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim on Malaysia assuming the ASEAN Chairmanship and announced that he will be attending the 47th ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur virtually.
PM Modi also wished him success for the upcoming ASEAN Summits, scheduled to take place in Kuala Lumpur later this month.
Expressing his eagerness to participate virtually, PM Modi said, “I had a warm conversation with my dear friend, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. I congratulated him on Malaysia’s ASEAN Chairmanship and conveyed my best wishes for the success of the upcoming Summits. I look forward to joining the ASEAN-India Summit virtually and further deepening the ASEAN-India Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.”
The leaders discussed the strong bilateral relationship between India and Malaysia, focusing on expanding cooperation in key sectors such as trade, investment, technology, education, and security. The forthcoming ASEAN Summit, from October 26 to 28, will serve as a vital platform for regional leaders to deliberate on maintaining peace, enhancing economic resilience, and promoting inclusive growth across Southeast Asia.
The ASEAN-India partnership has seen consistent progress, and PM Modi’s virtual attendance is expected to further reinforce collaboration between India and ASEAN member states. The summit will also witness the formal transition of the ASEAN Chairmanship from Malaysia to the Philippines, concluding a pivotal year of regional cooperation under Malaysia’s leadership.
The 47th ASEAN Summit and its related meetings will be held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from October 26 to 28, 2025. This summit marks the culmination of Malaysia’s 2025 ASEAN Chairmanship, held under the theme “Inclusivity and Sustainability.”
