Rahul Gandhi Attends Meeting at PM’s Office to Decide Next CBI Director
Panel Led by PM, Including CJI and Leader of Opposition, to Select Next CBI Director;

Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, arrived at the Prime Minister’s Office on Monday to attend a high-level meeting to select the next Director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
The CBI Director is appointed by the central government based on the recommendation of a three-member selection committee. The committee is chaired by the Prime Minister and includes the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha and the Chief Justice of India—or a Supreme Court judge nominated by the CJI.
As per a 2019 Supreme Court directive, only officers with at least six months of service left are eligible to be considered for the post. The court also mandated that the CBI Director must serve a minimum fixed term of two years and cannot be removed or transferred without the approval of the selection committee.
In addition, the Central Vigilance Commission Act, 2003, formally stipulates that the tenure of a CBI Director must be two years.
