ECI Orders Special Revision of Assam’s Electoral Rolls Ahead of 2026 Elections

ECI on Assam’s Electoral Rolls: The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Monday announced a 'Special Revision' of the electoral rolls in Assam, set to commence on November 18, 2025.
Making the announcement via a press release, the ECI detailed the schedule for this comprehensive exercise. It involves a detailed, door-to-door verification process scheduled from November 22 to December 20, 2025. The integrated draft electoral roll will be published on December 27, and the final list is slated for release on February 10, 2026.
"The Election Commission has ordered a Special Revision under Section 21 of the R.P. Act, 1950, w.r.t. 01.01.2026 as the qualifying date in Assam, starting from 18.11.2025," the poll panel said.
This Special Revision, with a qualifying date of January 1, 2026, is an enhanced form of the annual special summary revision, designed to be more thorough than the regular process but distinct from a Special Intensive Revision. The Commission noted the unique context of Assam: "There are special provisions for citizenship in the State of Assam. The verification of citizenship is already being done under the supervision of the Hon’ble Supreme Court and is in the final stages. Therefore, Special Revision (SR) is being ordered in place of Special Intensive Revision (SIR)."
A senior official also clarified that, unlike regular revisions, this process will use pre-filled registers for verification by booth-level officers, effectively replacing enumeration forms. The primary goal is to correct inaccuracies in the rolls by removing duplicate entries, dead voters, and those who have permanently relocated.
The ECI underscored the importance of ensuring all eligible voters are included while strictly barring ineligible names. This directive follows last month’s order for SIR in multiple states, including Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and West Bengal, which are also set to hold elections in 2026 alongside Assam.
