Indian Railways has shocked passengers by increasing passenger fares effective today, December 26, 2025. This is the second fare hike this year, following a previous revision in rail fares in July 2025. According to the Railway Ministry, this decision has been taken to maintain a balance between passenger convenience and the financial stability of the Railways.

The Railway Ministry stated that the objective of Fare Rationalization is to manage rising operational costs so that passengers continue to enjoy safe, reliable, and affordable travel in the future.

There is no change in fares for suburban train services.

Season tickets (suburban and non-suburban) remain unchanged.

Fares for travel up to 215 km in Second Class Ordinary will remain the same.

How much more will Second Class passengers have to pay?

For distances greater than 215 km, the Second Class Ordinary fare will increase according to the following slabs:

216–750 km: ₹5 more

751–1,250 km: ₹10 more

1,251–1,750 km: ₹15 more

1,751–2,250 km: ₹20 more

Sleeper and First Class (Ordinary)

Fares have been increased by 1 paisa per km in both Sleeper Class Ordinary and First Class Ordinary classes, which the Railways has described as a moderate and gradual increase.

Impact on Mail and Express Trains

Fares will increase by 2 paisa per km in all non-AC and AC classes of Mail and Express trains. For example, passengers will only have to pay ₹10 more for a 500 km journey.

Which trains will be subject to the new fares?

This increase will apply to these major trains:

Rajdhani

Shatabdi

Duronto

Vande Bharat

Tejas

When will the new fares be effective?

Railway's assurance to passengers

Indian Railways has stated that fare charts will be updated at all stations and its commitment to providing passengers with better, safer, and reliable service remains.
