Nitish Kumar Set To Be Re-Elected JD(U) National President
Bihar CM to file nomination at party's Delhi office today; re-election virtually certain as deadline for withdrawal set for March 24, voting unlikely
Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is set to be re-elected as the national president of Janata Dal (United), with the party chief scheduled to file his nomination at the JD(U) Central Office in New Delhi at 4 pm on Thursday — a move that comes even as speculation over the state's political future continues following his resignation from the Rajya Sabha.
The nomination filing deadline for the JD(U) national president's post is March 22, with scrutiny of papers also scheduled for the same day. Candidates may withdraw nominations until March 24. Should more than one candidate remain in the fray after withdrawals, voting would be held on March 27 — though party insiders consider a contest virtually impossible, making Nitish Kumar's re-election a foregone conclusion.
Nitish Kumar's nomination filing is expected to be attended by prominent JD(U) leaders from Bihar and other states. Party acting national president Sanjay Jha and minister Shravan Kumar are among those confirmed to be present.
Lallan Singh had stepped down as JD(U) president just ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, after which Nitish Kumar assumed the party's national leadership. His return to the presidency underscores his continued grip over the party's organisational machinery even as questions about Bihar's political succession remain unanswered.
