Republic Day 2026: EU Leaders Join President Murmu as Chief Guests
77th celebrations themed '150 Years of Vande Mataram'; European Council and Commission Presidents grace Kartavya Path ceremony
India celebrated its 77th Republic Day on January 26 with President Droupadi Murmu leading the ceremonies at Kartavya Path in New Delhi. European Council President Antonio Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen served as Chief Guests, marking a significant diplomatic presence.
The celebrations were organized around the central theme "150 Years of Vande Mataram," commemorating the iconic national song's legacy.
The presence of both top European Union leaders underscores the strengthening India-EU strategic partnership. This marks a rare occasion of dual Chief Guests from the same political bloc attending India's Republic Day celebrations.
Antonio Costa, 63, has served as President of the European Council since 2024. The European Council is the EU's highest political institution, comprising heads of state and government from all member states. It provides strategic direction and priority setting for the bloc.
Born in Lisbon, Portugal, on July 17, 1961, Costa previously served as Portugal's Prime Minister from 2015 to 2024. He is married with two children.
Republic Day commemorates the adoption of India's Constitution on January 26, 1950, when the nation officially became a sovereign, socialist, secular, and democratic republic. The date was chosen to honor the declaration of Purna Swaraj (complete independence) made by the Indian National Congress on January 26, 1930.
The Kartavya Path parade showcased India's military strength, cultural diversity, and constitutional values before thousands of spectators and a global audience.
