A four-month-old marriage ended in a chilling murder on Sunday evening after a 31-year-old chartered accountant killed his pregnant wife in Haryana's Jhajjar district and attempted to pass it off as a robbery gone wrong. The accused, Anshul Dhawan, was arrested after confessing during sustained questioning.

The victim, 27-year-old Mehak Dhawan, was a bank employee and two months pregnant. The couple had married on September 25 last year and were living in Gurugram.

Police received a Dial 112 call claiming a newly married couple had been attacked and the woman killed during a robbery. Mehak's body was later found near a canal.

At the scene, Anshul allegedly told police that unidentified men had intercepted their car, murdered his wife, and fled with the vehicle.

"He told us that some men stopped their car, assaulted them, killed his wife and took away the car," Badli Station House Officer Suresh Kumar said.

However, investigators quickly detected inconsistencies. "During questioning, he tried to mislead the police. But after sustained interrogation, he broke down and confessed," Kumar added.

Police said Anshul admitted he had planned the killing and brought scissors with him. During interrogation, he allegedly revealed he first strangled Mehak and then slit her throat with the scissors.

According to police, Anshul was driving Mehak from her parents' home in Hansi to Gurugram when the incident occurred near Badli. Officials noted the couple had celebrated Valentine's Day before the crime.

Investigators said suspicion over his wife's character emerged as a possible motive. Anshul allegedly objected to her frequent phone conversations with bank colleagues.

An FIR has been registered based on Mehak's family's complaint. The accused will be produced in court and taken on remand. Her family has demanded strict punishment.
